Testosterone is a hormone that helps with muscle strength, energy, mood and sexual health. Sometimes, doctors prescribe it as a therapeutic medication when the body no longer produces enough testosterone on its own. It can be taken via injection or topically through a gel or patch. Always follow your doctor’s dosing advice and closely monitor side effects.

About Testosterone
How does it work?
Testosterone (the hormone) sends signals through your body that help control muscle growth, bone strength, energy and mood. Testosterone also plays a key role in making red blood cells and supporting sexual health. When these hormone levels are low, the body may feel weak, tired or less balanced. Boosting hormone levels with Testosterone medication improves those systems and symptoms.
What does it treat?
Testosterone medication is used to treat low testosterone hormone levels in people who don’t make enough testosterone on their own. It can help improve energy, mood, muscle strength and sexual health. Doctors may also prescribe Testosterone medication for specific medical conditions that disrupt hormone balance.
What forms does it come in?
Testosterone comes in different forms, including injectable oils, skin gels and patches. Some people may also use tablets that stick to the gums or small pellets placed under the skin. Your doctor will choose the form that works best for your health and lifestyle.
Please note that the Testosterone patch and oral forms are not available options on the Dr. B platform at this time.
Testosterone vs. Testosterone Cypionate
Testosterone is the hormone that becomes the “medication” in all forms of testosterone replacement therapy medications. Testosterone Cypionate is a generic form of injectable Testosterone medication. It was created to have a half-life (the amount of time the drug concentration reduces in your body by half) of around 8 days, so it can be taken on a weekly or biweekly schedule.
Testosterone Cypionate vs. Depo-Testosterone
Depo-Testosterone is a brand-name form of injectable Testosterone Cypionate. It contains the same active ingredient (Testosterone Cypionate) as the generic injectable medication and works the same way in the body.
Testosterone Gel vs. AndroGel
AndroGel is a brand-name medication containing Testosterone that comes as a skin gel. It contains the same active ingredient (Testosterone) as the generic gel form of this medication and works the same way in the body. Testosterone gels are often applied to clean skin on the shoulders or upper arms once daily.

Prescription TRT medications

STEP ONE
Clarify It
Why do you feel as you do—and what can you do about it?
On two separate mornings, complete blood work at Quest Diagnostics. The first set of tests tracks testosterone levels and other biomarkers that affect health and vitality—plus, factors that indicate treatment risk. The second only tests testosterone, helping providers understand precisely how much T your body naturally produces right now.
STEP TWO
Optimize It
Meet with a licensed provider via video to review your symptoms + blood work results.
If they determine TRT is right for you, they'll send a prescription to your chosen pharmacy. Dr. B will start delivering science-backed fitness, nutrition and mental health tips straight to your inbox. You'll check in with your provider monthly and retest some biomarker levels every 3 months.
If they determine that something other than low T is causing your symptoms, they'll offer insight into your biomarker results + suggest lifestyle modifications to improve your hormone health. Then, you'll get those same Optimize It support tools!

How do I use this medication?
Testosterone Cypionate (generic Depo-Testosterone) is a prescription medicine that comes as a thick oil that you inject into a large muscle (like the buttocks or upper thigh). Use a sterile drawing needle and syringe to draw up the medicine, then a sterile injection needle to inject it straight into the muscle. Inject your medications every 1-2 weeks, depending on your provider’s instructions, rotating injection sites to avoid soreness.
Testosterone Gel (generic AndroGel) is a clear gel that you rub on clean, dry skin, usually on your shoulders, upper arms or belly (depending on the type). After putting it on, let it dry before dressing and wash your hands well. It’s important not to shower, swim or let others touch the area until the gel is fully dry and absorbed into the skin.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of Testosterone medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, just skip the missed one and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take extra to make up for the missed dose, as that could cause side effects.
What happens if I use too much?
Using too much Testosterone can cause problems like mood changes, acne or swelling. It may also raise your risk for heart, liver or prostate issues. Always follow your doctor’s directions to stay safe and avoid these side effects.
If you’ve taken too much Testosterone, call your medical provider or local poison control center (800-222-1222) immediately.
